September and October 2019

Hey!  I'm almost caught up to less than a year behind!  Wahoo!

It was only a couple of weeks after we got back from Disney that another exciting thing happened!  That's right.  FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!  Look and these beautiful/handsome/cute stinkers!

Arden had her second year of Junior High.  Dax had his official last year of Elementary, and Cora was in 5th.  Summer wasn't officially over yet, as we went to the cabin over Labor Day.  Arden's friend Ava came too.  We went to the beach, and I reluctantly let Arden and Ava take a waverunner out by themselves.  They were gone a really long time, and I was sure something horrible had happened and they were capsized somewhere in the middle of the lake.  I was about to initiate a search pattern with the other waverunner when I finally saw them.  They had been making "Tik Toks" on Ava's phone and that is what took them so long.  *sigh*

We also went to the pool, and had it to ourselves for a while, it was BEAUTIFUL!
On the way home, we stopped to visit Kohl, who was going up to school at Utah State.  His phone was broken and Preston was helping to fix it.  While Preston worked on it, he played on the swings and played hide and seek with the kids.  What a good sport.
Fall soccer season was upon us!  Arden usually would opt out of watching, but sometimes she came along.
Dax would also come, especially if bribed with a drink from Fizz (which Preston was a VERY FREQUENT customer).  Dax is not as good at pulling cute faces as Arden is.
So, this happened.  We adopted a kitten!  His name was Sherriff at the adoption center, but we decided we didn't like that.  We named him Loki, after the character from the Marvel movies, you know, the God of Mischief.  What could go wrong?
Arden and Ava decided they were in love with Steve from Stranger Things (in addition to Tom Holland from Spiderman for Arden and Chris Hemsworth (Thor) for Ava).  They begged me to draw a picture of him for them.  I thought it was hilarious so I obliged.  I even put blood on him, cuz that was how the picture I was working from was.  You know, Demogorgons and stuff.  Arden hung it on her wall immediately and there it stayed for a few months.  Silly girls.
So, while I was in my "no-running-broken-ankle" purgatory, I decided that in order to keep from losing all my fitness I better start biking.  The only bike I had was a free one that was like 14 years old, so I got a new road bike!  Not too fancy, but good enough for me.
Olive got a haircut.  Olive hates getting haircuts. Have you ever seen such a pretty but sad doggie?
Cora's soccer team went to a U of U soccer game and painted their faces and ate a bunch of junk.  It was super fun!

More soccer shenanigans!  Coras team finished the fall season in 1st place!  Good job girls!

We headed up to the cabin pre-Halloween.  It snowed!  We snuggled in to watch Hocus Pocus, an annual tradition.
Olive and I love to go on Fall walks, cuz...leaves!
Guys, I LOVE fall leaves!

Syracuse Pumpkin Walk is always fun too.

Cora made some cute Halloween Oreos.  She is my most culinary child.
We had a trunk or treat at the church this year!  I decided to try and dress up a little.  I was a witch, and Loki was my black cat.  Cora says we have matching green eyes.
Arden and Ali and Emily were the three little pigs!  How cute are these girls??  I love it.  Such flattering costumes.
Another pic of Loki being a Halloween decoration.
Olive was a fairy princess.  Clearly she is super excited about it.
Daxton dressed up as a guy riding a dinosaur.
And Cora was a cute snow leopard!
Another annual tradition was our pumpkin carving!  The kids mostly did their own.  Cora's is the Cheshire Cat on the top, my sweet Arden's is the screaming one (it actually has fake blood on it and a knife in its head, but it's too dark to see), Dax's is the minecraft one, and mine was the skeleton on the bottom.  I totally can't remember what the heck the other one is.  But it is always fun scraping out pumpkin guts!
It was a cool night, but the kids all stayed out Trick-or-Treating for hours, and had more candy than they knew what to do with!  I stayed home and manned the doorbell, which is my favorite thing to do on Halloween (as opposed to escorting trick or treaters up and down hills).  I love Halloween!

Disneyland August 2019!

My kids' favorite vacations, by a large margin, are Disney vacations.  So, we decided another trip was in order, and we headed out!  This time we didn't really plan very far ahead and couldn't find any reasonable air fare, so we DROVE.  I had broken my ankle the weekend before we left, but I had an air cast and a boot and some crutches.  We packed it all in the car and headed across the desert!  We ran into a HUGE traffic jam in the canyon on the way to Vegas, and so we ended up having to stop in Barstow (armpit) for the night, but we made it to Disneyland the next morning around 10:30.  YAY!!!

It was so nice to be in Disneyland.  I just love it and I feel so excited just like a kid every time I go through the gates.  I did NOT want to bring my crutches to the park, since I thought it was going to be really hard to find a place to put them on rides, so I kind of hobbled around.  The very first thing the kids wanted to do was get Mikey Ears.  Well, the girls did, and Dax wanted a hat with Stitch ears.  They looked cute.  We went on the Jungle Cruise, and we had a really funny guide.  We were in the Hippo pool, and instead of shooting the gun to scare the hippos away, he said something like, "I'm going to scare these hippos away the same way I scared away my last girlfriend."  He then put down the microphone, leaned over the side of the boat, and screamed "I LOOOOVE YOOOU!"  I looked at my mom and we both started laughing so hard.  None of my kids got the joke.

My kids all enjoy the classic rides, and even enjoy the little silly ones like Mr. Toad.  Preston and Dax left in the afternoon to pick Grandma and Grandpa up from the airport, but me and the girls soldiered on.
We stayed until 8:00 or so, and my leg was totally spilling out of my compression sock until it was actually bruising.  :-\ .  I used the ice machine to ice my leg every night and during our afternoon resting periods.  Once I started walking it would loosen up, but first thing in the morning it was pretty painful!!

The next day we had a magic morning in Tomorrowland/Fantasy land, and my kids LOVE Space Mountain so much.  And Star Tours.  And the Matterhorn.  But when it was park opening time, we were very excited to head over to the new Star Wars "Galaxy's Edge" land.  I even wore my Chewbacca shirt, and as soon as we got in there we saw Chewy himself!  I also saw Rey and she told me she liked my shirt.  :)

(You can see from the picture above that even though it is still first thing in the morning, one of my legs is maybe a little larger than the other one.  Oh well, suck it up, we are at Disneyland!)

The whole area was super cool.  It was amazing to see the Millennium Falcon!

We waited in a VERRRRY long line to ride "Smugglers Run."  In this ride you get to actually pretend to drive the Millennium Falcon, but you are either the pilot, the gunner, or the engineer.  The pilot is the best (but most stressful), the gunner is fun, but the engineer, only pushes like one button the whole time, and is in the back of the cockpit, so avoid it if possible.

We had a super fun day.  I had an app on my phone that let me book fast passes from there, which was super helpful to cut down on unnecessary walking.  For dinner, we at at Paradise Pier, and Arden was saving us a place and took about 20 pictures of herself.  She's adorable.

Here is a cute picture of Cora and Grandma on the Little Mermaid ride.  I appreciated any chance to sit down.  I especially loved going to shows and propping my leg up, but as the days went by my ankle actually felt better and better.

My mom and dad are such good sports and we walked all around, even though my mom's hip wasn't feeling the greatest.  They are the best grandparents, and I'm glad they are willing to run all over the parks with us.

I think Thunder Mountain was Dax's favorite ride.
Arden's favorite ride is Pirates of the Caribbean.  One of my most favorite rides is the Haunted Mansion, which happened to be having its 50th birthday WHILE WE WERE THERE!  We got to ride it on its very birthday, and everyone sang "Happy Birthday To You" as we got out of the spooky elevator and walked down the spooky hallway.
Cora's favorite ride was Matterhorn, and she also loved the IncrediCoaster.  Preston liked Star Wars Land.  One of my dad's favorite things to do is to go watch the nighttime show at California Adventure.  It is so pretty to see all the lights at night.

The next time we went on the Smuggler's Run ride I made the kids and Preston sit down at the space chess board for a photo op!  So cool!

Everyone was brave and went on the Guardians of the Galaxy ride.  It was really fun, but I am still angry that they switched it away from the Tower of Terror.  We were lucky and fast-passed our way onto all of the major rides mostly every day.

We would get up early and be there around opening, and then around lunchtime we would head back over to our Marriot across the street, have lunch and take a nap.  The kids were tired enough each afternoon that they didn't mind, and they would actually sleep, or at least be quiet.  Then we would head back over in the later afternoon and stay until dark.  We even shut the park down a time or two, which was midnight!  The weather was perfect the whole time.
Did I mention that I love Disneyland?  My kids all mentioned more than once that it is magical there.  There was one night when we were watching the fireworks over by Its a Small World because they project movie images into the facade of the ride there.  I was holding 10-year old Cora so she could see (because she is still small enough to hold), and they were playing "Let it Go" from Frozen.  The fireworks were going and the projections were playing, and they turned on the snow machines.  As Cora and I were twirling around in the colorful lights,  watching the sparkly fireworks with beautiful snowflakes swirling around us as we sang along, it was definitely magical.   Arden promised that even when she was 16 or 17 she would still want to come to Disneyland with me.
I also love the food.  I love the Mikey Pretzels, I love the King Corn Dogs, churros are always good, but my most favorite treat is a Dole Whip at the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room.  Clearly the kids agree.
Cora's favorite ride, the Matterhorn.  New and improved Yeti since I was a kid.  They have changed the cars to add more safety, and we don't have to lap-sit anymore, but they are so narrow that my parents don't enjoy shoving themselves into the seats and generally sit this ride out.

Arden was usually willing to pose, and she is super cute!  Here she is with some droids:

This is a fun picture of most of us on Splash Mountain.  None of the kids were willing to sit in the front, so Preston fell on the sword.  I love Splash Mountain.

We were headed back to the hotel for lunch one day, but stopped to get our picture taken by one of the picture takers.  It turned out really well, but Dax was hungry and was not happy to have his lunch delayed.  He's still cute.

Here is a picture we had taken one night at Galaxy's Edge also.  Me and Preston are in the back.  Grandma and Grandpa had headed off to bed, but the rest of us were still going.  The kids are supposed to be doing a "Force Push."   They are so cute.
It was worth all the driving and walking and pain in my foot!  It was so much fun and I can't wait until the world gets back to normal and we can do something like that again.

July 2019 Fun and Not-So Fun Stuff

So, back to July/August 2019, when life was simple and I didn't own a single face mask!  First, Cora's soccer team did a couple of soccer tournaments during the summer.  Cora plays forward, which is her favorite position, because she can just hang out by the goal and not help on defense :).  Her team was in the championship game in one tournament, and they had two overtimes and then went to a shootout.  I think there were three rounds of shootout before the game was finally over, and unfortunately Cora's team lost, but it was a super exciting game, and the girls were happy to get their medals even if it was for second place:

Cora's coach Emalee was so awesome, and sent us a email every week with how the team was doing.  They improved a lot and the girls were all so fun.  It was a fun team!
One day we went to the pool with some friends, which is always fun.  Cora was so cute while eating a popsicle with her goggles on her head I had to take a snap.
The kids swam around a lot, but a lot of the time they were huddled together in the water playing "Mafia," a game where you have to play a role, and if you are the "Mafia" you have to lie and pretend you are not.  I am very bad at this game, but the kids love it.

Cora and Dax were whining one day that we hadn't been camping all summer.  Preston was busy with something and Arden wasn't feeling like going, so I got brave and took the two littlest up to Bountiful Peak all by myself!

We set up the tent and got a fire going and everything!  We had a great time, but I did hear something walking around outside the tent in the middle of the night (it was probably a mouse or a raccoon), but it sounded like a huge bear and it took me forever to calm down and go back to sleep.  Next time (if there ever is a next time of solo camping) I will bring a weapon of some kind to defend my tent.

We invited the Wongs up the cabin for our annual summertime hang out!  The kids are growing up!  We went to the beach of course, and had fun waverunning and burying Nash in the sand and making sandcastles and all that good stuff.

We went to the poll and splashed around and sat in the hot tub and played Marco Polo and all that good stuff.

We went to Ice Caves in Paris Canyon.  It is always fun to see the the ice in the summertime and crawl around in the dark.  This year, the kids really wanted to climb all over the rocks, which was really scary for me, but no one got hurt so we called it a victory.

We went for a hike along a beautiful river in Paris Canyon!  Arden and Zane kind of hung out together a lot on this trip.  So, here is a picture of Arden and Zane, sitting in a tree!

Whenever we weren't doing an activity, the kids all gathered together and played "Werewolves," which is a game where you play a role, and if you are the "Werewolf," you have to lie and pretend that you aren't.  I am not good at this game, but the kids love it.  They also love marshmallow roasting!  It was a fun trip as always.

This picture was on my phone, and I just thought it was a cute picture of my silly girlies, so here it is.

At the end of July, I was excited to run the Timp half marathon.  It was a "Race for Cancer" and they gave us a bib so we could run in memory of someone, so of course I decided I would run for Brynn!  I was going to try to beat my PR of 1:37.

The morning of the race was a little rainy, but the rain stopped before the starting gun went off.  I was doing pretty good for the first few miles, but then right at mile 4, I was running as fast as I could down a hill, and stepped right on a rock about the size of a deck of cards, skidded, and took a bad spill.  My ankle hurt right away, and I skinned all the skin off of my opposite knee.  I quickly scooted to the side of the road to try and figure out what was going on.  I stood up and tried to walk a little, and it hurt significantly, but I thought it was probably just a strain and maybe it would start feeling better if I tried to "walk it off," or well..."run."  Lots of people I had worked hard to pass were passing me, so I jumped back out there and tried to go.

I ran for a mile until the mile 5 aid station.  It wasn't my fastest mile.  My ankle was not feeling any better yet, and probably a little worse, but I was still hoping it would get better, so I got a water and kept on truckin'.  There were two miles until the next aid station, but I was fully intending to make it to 13.1, and finish this thing for Brynn.  So, I kept going.

The next two miles were not my favorite.  I was steadily slowing down, and around mile 6, I decided that at the next aid station I would see if they had any tape or anything I could wrap my ankle up with.  By the time I got to the mile 7 aid station, I was hobbling pretty severely.  I asked the guy in charge if he had a medical kit or anything, but he looked around for me and all they had was band-aids.  I took a couple and stuck them on my bloody knee, felt sad there was nothing I could do about my ankle, and headed out again.

I had only stood still for a couple of minutes while they looked around, but my ankle had stiffened up and felt horrible as I headed away from the aid station.  I only walked for a couple of minutes before I finally gave in the fact that I wasn't going to make it 6 more miles to the finish.  Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them to, no matter how hard you want to fight. I turned around and headed back to the aid station.  They called a ride for me to the finish, and it turned out to be a full-on ambulance.

I told them I had a sprained ankle and was fine, but I needed a ride to the finish.  I felt dumb riding in an ambulance for a sprained ankle, but that was the only ride available.  They dropped me at the finish, I hobbled back to my car, and drove home.  I went to Cora's soccer game that afternoon with ice on my ankle, and it was really not feeling the best.  By the evening, it had swollen, juuust a little:

Preston went out and got me some crutches since he was tired of watching me hop around, and he knew that it must really hurt because I was icing it constantly and I generally hate it when ice is touching me in any way.  By that the next day (Sunday) my whole foot was swollen and red, despite anti-inflammatories and constant icing:

Preston convinced me to go to the doctor the next day, and...my ankle was broken in two places!  Bummer!  It wasn't displaced so no surgery needed, but they told me no running for at least 3-4 months, which put my plans for a fall marathon out the window.  :(  Plus I was supposed to go to girls camp the next week, and Disneyland the next weekend!  I bailed out of girls camp, but there was no way to cancel Disney since we already had tickets and hotel rooms booked.  But, more on that next!
